Expectations
I am not a strong believer in making rules, but I do have expectations for my students. I expect them to treat each other with respect, to clean up after their mess and to ask for permission to go to the bathroom.
In my classroom:
Here is an example of what I do NOT expect from my students:
In my classroom:
- Students are encouraged to ask questions.
- Class discussions occur regularly.
- Creative thinking is rewarded.
- Learning is a reciprocal experience.
Here is an example of what I do NOT expect from my students:
I feel that by implementing expectations such as this, it is very controlling. This chart contains expectations that attempt to control students and does not allow them to express themselves. Some children are unable to sit down and stay focused. If they are unable to do so, then I will try to accommodate their needs by doing more hands on activities. I don't want my students to feel as though they are unable to express themselves. I want them to want to listen and to want to participate in classroom activities. Moreover, I want them to want to learn.
That being said, I do not tolerate disrespect towards myself or other classmates. If students display meanness towards their peers then they will be punished.
