Lesson Plan #3: Ugly Duckling Excercise
Theme: Racism
Subject Area: English, Math
Materials: The Ugly Duckling Book
Objective: For students to practice basic math excercises.
Plan: First, I will read the book to the class. Then, I will show a two or three slide powerpoint presentation. It will be an image of the ducklings and I will ask the class to count how many ducklings there are. The point of the excercise is that the class will count the ugly duckling as one of the 5 ducklings. Then I will ask the class how many ducklings there are if the ugly duckling is taken away from the picture, leaving less ducklings to play with each other. A group discussion will follow this activity, where I will ask students if they have ever felt left out before.
